Microsoft uses field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to improve performance, reduce power consumption, and provide new capabilities in Azure datacenters. We have designed an FPGA board that plugs into Microsoft-designed OCS servers. In this talk we discuss SmartNIC, an application of FPGAs to networking to enhance our NICs with reconfigurable logic for our software defined networking stack, and demonstrate applications of SmartNIC and FPGAs running in Azure.
