Telco industry have recently embraced the Open Compute Project with the objective of bringing rapid innovation to telco data centers. Facing the growth of internet traffic, especially with the movement towards video content, deployment of Content Delivery Network (CDN) in an operator's network has been the major technical and economic response by telco carriers.

However, there is a subtle difference between building a CDN infrastructure as opposed to a data center, especially for video streaming where bandwidth alone is not enough. There is a need to be able to deliver video steadily and reliably to 100K users simultaneously without so much as a hiccup. At 100G rates and the requirement to deliver packets flawlessly to so many users, managing each individual stream in software is simply not an option. Having the right choice of hardware and software therefore becomes the key to building an efficient Telco CDN appliance. In this presentation, we discuss some of the challenges of CDN, its requirement from underlying infrastructure and how it can be delivered with an OCP based platform.
