AF-Media High Density All-flash Media Server

Abstract AF-Media server is a high density/high efficient all-flash storage server optimized for delivering media contents, developed by SK Telecom. As the leading telecom operator in Korea, SK Telecom was trying to find ways to enhance the service and decrease the TCO of its IPTV service. In order to achieve the goal, SK Telecom cooperated with its two subordinates; SK Hynix, a memory semiconductor of DRAM and Flash chips, and SK Broadband, an internet access and IPTV/CDN service provider. AF-Media was developed as a cooperation project among three companies. AF-Media S16 utilizes the latest Intel Xeon D SoC with 2.5" SATA SSDs and OCP mezzanine network card. The AF-Media features two hot-swappable compute nodes in a 2U form factor to provide an industry leading sixteen hot-swap 2.5" SSD drive bays or two PCIe SSD card slots for largest storage capacity per 1U compute node. Both drives and compute nodes are hot-swappable to facilitate ease of maintenance and minimize down time. To save power and space, the nodes share the same chassis and power supplies. Utilizing AF-Media S16 for its IPTV service, SK Telecom reduced power consumption and density by 80%, while providing better storage and network IO throughput compare to HDD based streaming server system. For this upcoming talk, SK Telecom would like to discuss about the design details, ecosystem, and the support received from OCP projects. As a token of our gratitude, SK Telecom recently upgraded the OCP member ship to Gold level, and expects to continue contributing to OCP for the future.
